Vista Murrieta Track Club coach Coley Candaele was waiting to hear his team’s coronation as boys champion of the inaugural Nike Track Nationals when suddenly Brophy Prep was announced as the winner and listed on top of the standings that appeared on the Hayward Field videoboard.
“When those results came up different, I thought, ‘Was there something I missed?’” Candaele said.
So the coach ran to the scorers table and found out there was a mistake made in the decathlon-style scoring system and his boys were indeed the champion of the 12-team prep track and field meet Friday night. Candaele said Brophy Prep’s miler was incorrectly given double points in the final event, but once that error was corrected, Vista Murrieta was declared the champion with 7,797.18 points.
