Poly relay team has fastest time of year - Press-TelegramPublished by
The Poly High girls won't get another chance
to run the 4x800-meter relay this season, but the Jackrabbits went out
in style in the 42nd Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High on Friday
night. The Jackrabbits timed 9:01.89 for the fastest time in the
nation this season. The mark by juniors Ne'Ausha Logan, Erica Winston
and Tia Leake and sophomore Dynasty Gammage lowered its previous
nation-leading mark of 9:07.85 in the Texas Relays last Saturday. The time moved Poly into second on the all-time Arcadia
list behind the meet record of 8:58.30, set by A.P. Randolph (N.Y) in
2002. The competition turned into a time trial after a 2:13.3 leg
by Leake on the third leg with reigning CIF Southern Section Division I
champion Logan anchoring with a 2:14.9 split as the Jackrabbits
finished well ahead of runner-up Ruyton of Australia (9:15.11). "We didn't expect to beat them by that much but we were going for the nine-minute barrier," Logan said. Poly
has taken 17 seconds off its season best in the last three races in the
4x800. Leake credited the 6-second drop in the Arcadia Invitational to
improved handoffs from the Texas Relays. "It takes up two to three seconds if we mess up, so we had to practice," Leake said. Wilson
had its handoffs down in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay to defend
its Arcadia title in the 200-200-400-800 relay with juniors Alycia
Presley, Olivia Hudson, senior Nyjah Cousar and junior Christina Smith. Read the full article at: www.presstelegram.com
